Entry 10: One Legged Ghost (Quỷ Một Giò)

Origin From Resentment Of The Crippled

In the long nights of the gloomy realm, where resentment lingers without dispersing, the One Legged Ghost silently forms from the deepest grievances. They are born from the souls of those who lost part of their body in life, dying in pain and decay on desolate battlefields or sudden disasters. That vengeful spirit does not transcend, but transforms into evil thoughts, wandering between two realms to find ways to spread their own pain.

Central and western regions still whisper about their origin, linked to ancient villages where disasters once struck. Not demons from the depths of hell, but shadows of cursed human lives. Whenever the full moon shines, yin and yang energies intertwine, they rise again, ready to drag new victims into nightmares.

Form And The Bone Chilling Howl

Imagine a huge dark shadow, tall and dark as night swallowing light, its entire body covered in rough black fur evoking wild desolation. Its face is the true horror, a skull wrapped in thin skin, a gaping mouth revealing sharp fangs gleaming under the moon. Despite possessing only one leg, the One Legged Ghost moves at terrifying speed, leaping through space with heavy jumps.

Its howl echoes far away, not just sound but a bone piercing stream of resentment, carrying the cold breath of death that makes listeners’ souls scatter instantly. Those who accidentally stray into deep forests or empty riverbanks on moonlit nights often hear thumping sounds echoing from afar, like the heartbeat of hell pounding. And when that shadow appears, with red eyes flashing from dark sockets, fear will strangle you, turning healthy legs into invisible burdens.

Fateful Encounters

In the mountainous regions of central Vietnam, the story of Old Khang is still told as a warning to those who underestimate the supernatural. That year, under the bright moon, he was guarding a hut in the deep forest when heavy thumping sounds rang from the valley, signaling the one legged dark shadow rushing forward. The old man tried to flee, but death energy had clung tightly behind, the howl dragging on like a thousand curses tearing eardrums, making him collapse in madness.

The next morning, villagers found him still breathing, but one leg from the knee had disappeared cleanly as if cut by an invisible scythe. In his final seven days, Old Khang babbled endlessly about the One Legged Ghost’s hatred of completeness, about the mad howl wanting everything to be disabled like it. On the seventh night, the dark shadow jumped again on the high hill, as if cheering victory under the moonlight.

There are also rumors in Long An, where the One Legged Ghost once lured people to throw themselves from tall trees, turning them into its kind in endless pain. An old clinic was haunted, with a legless dark shadow hopping on the roof, whispering death invitations into the ears of those who lost their way. Those stories are not fiction, but real scars deeply carved into village memories, reminding that once resentment awakens, it will spare no one.

Warnings And Expulsion Rituals

Though that horror makes you tremble, folk still pass down secrets to survive moonlit nights. Stay away from deep mountains or empty riverbanks when silver light shines, and if you hear thumping sounds from afar, lie still, cover your ears with exorcism leaves. Light incense and pray to village gods, asking for protection so the vengeful spirit cannot smell the warmth of your life.

If forced to face it, some shamans advise using salt mixed with ginger scattered around the path, for that pungent smell can make the One Legged Ghost shrink back, temporarily retreating. But deeper still, the reminder is about compassion: pity the crippled souls, do not despise disability. Lest that resentment one day returns to knock on your door, for in the darkness, the One Legged Ghost does not just hunt bodies, but whispers into souls, turning fear into your own eternal obsession.
