Entry 12: Chicken Ghost (Ma Gà)

Origin From Generational Curse

Amid misty mountain villages of the northern highlands, where Tày and Nùng people whisper secrets that cannot be spoken aloud, Chicken Ghost silently forms from resentment and human greed. It is not a transformed chicken, but an invisible spirit invited into an earthen jar, fed with fresh blood from live chickens slaughtered monthly. According to legend, whoever raises Chicken Ghost will quickly become wealthy, with treasures filling the house, but in exchange comes a generational curse, forcing descendants to continue making offerings if they do not want it to turn malevolent and claim the entire lineage.

Lạng Sơn folklore tells that Chicken Ghost has other names like Ma Chài or Ma Ngũ Hải, born from ancient rituals meant to protect fields and gardens from thieves. But once the jar is placed in the corner near the ancestral altar, that blood contract cannot be broken. Abandon it, and Chicken Ghost will whisper through dreams, bringing calamity to the entire village.

Invisible Form And Death Breath

Chicken Ghost has no clear form, only a cold air current lingering around the old earthen jar, hidden in a dark corner of the stilt house. By day, it lies still as death, but on stormy nights, you may hear faint breathing from the jar mouth, mixed with the pungent smell of dried blood. Flickering red light casts out from cracks, like invisible eyes watching every corner.

It does not harm the household, but silently guards wealth, making any thief who approaches wake up dead and stiff, belly swollen with missing entrails. Yet if that month you forget to offer a chicken, Chicken Ghost will possess family members, making them laugh hysterically and go mad, eyes white muttering demands for food. At that point, only human blood can substitute, or the entire village must tremble awaiting its wrath.

Spine Chilling Stories From Mountain Villages

In old man Lình’s village, where Chicken Ghost has been raised for three generations, the third watch of night often echoes with startled rooster cries from deep forests, though no coops are nearby. Travelers caught in storms tell of glimpsing black shadows licking inside the jar through door cracks, the stench rising suffocating making stomachs cramp. Since then, villagers avoid calling Chicken Ghost’s name after sunset, fearing it will hear and follow them home.

There are also rumors about beautiful young women haunted by Chicken Ghost, like a generational curse passing from house to house, making them live in vague fear. An old woman in Lạng Sơn once told how her daughter suddenly laughed and spoke strangely, demanding chicken blood in the middle of night, and only when inviting a shaman was it temporarily driven away. But deep down, everyone knows Chicken Ghost never truly leaves, it only waits for opportunity to return, whispering deadly invitations.

Advice From Elders And Offering Rituals

Though that obsession makes your heart race, village elders still advise that raising Chicken Ghost is a double edged sword, gaining wealth but losing people, and best not to foolishly touch it. If you already have a jar in the house, make offerings on time, slaughter a live chicken so blood flows freely into the jar mouth, pray to ancestors asking forgiveness for this binding. Forget just one month, and you will hear whispers from dark corners, reminding that this spirit does not forgive.

To drive it away if possible, some shamans use spell leaves burned mixed with roasted salt scattered around the jar, but few dare try for fear it will grow angry and spread to neighbors. Deeper still, the warning is about greed: do not invite darkness into your home for temporary wealth. For Chicken Ghost, once it has smelled blood, will follow you forever, licking in your sleep, waiting for the day the lineage breaks.
