Entry 13: Jiao Long (Giao Long)

Dark Origin Beneath The Water

Jiao Long, also called Thuồng Luồng in the whispers of fishermen, lurks in deep rivers where light cannot reach. They are not pure dragons, but hybrid creatures, carrying dragon blood mixed with the crudeness of venomous snakes and fierce fish. From ancient legends in the Underworld Records, they are described as phantoms of the water realm, always yearning to reach the heights but forever trapped in a painful cycle of evolution.

For centuries, fishermen along the Red River or vast lakes like Ba Bể still tell of them with trembling voices. Unfortunate boats suddenly sink, followed by roars echoing from the depths. Not by chance, but warnings from these creatures, those who consider waters their private domain and any trespasser must pay with their lives.

Blood Soaked Evolution Journey

The growth of Jiao Long is like a curse stretching through time, beginning from small snakes hiding in muddy swamps. They shed their skin endlessly, devouring everything around to feed their desire for transformation. Gradually, when front legs emerge, they become Thuồng Luồng, giant black shadows gliding across water surfaces, making leaves on riverbanks tremble from spreading fear.

Then comes maturity, when all four limbs are complete and heads raised high with jagged horned crests, they officially become Jiao Long. At this stage, they swim freely between fresh and salt water, from the open sea upstream into inland to mate. Those encounters often end with terrifying floods, sweeping away villages like curses from the underworld.

According to historical records like the Complete Annals of Đại Việt, ancient Hùng kings taught people to use black ink to paint water monster shapes on their skin to ward them off. That tattooing custom was not just ritual, but a reminder of the life and death struggle between humans and eternal predators beneath the rivers.

Terrifying Powers

Jiao Long possess strength that makes ordinary water monsters bow, first being the ability to control water, making it surge according to their will. Just one tail flick creates a giant whirlpool, swallowing boats like children’s play. When mating season arrives, hordes gather, transforming peaceful rivers into flood nightmares, drowning everything in wet darkness.

They also possess earth tunneling powers, diving deep into the earth to dig channels that water follows. Those tunnels not only change water flow, but also disrupt life energy, turning fertile lands into deathly swamps. Folklore tells that anyone who accidentally digs into their lairs will hear whispers rising up, followed by endless rains carrying the stench of the abyss.

Precious Medicines From Monster Flesh

The body of Jiao Long is a deadly treasure that ancient mages and physicians crave, but touching it invites calamity. Their blood, especially during reproduction, is considered dragon blood, that deep red liquid nourishing the soul and dispelling evil energy. Drinking just one drop is enough to make mortals stand firm against phantoms, but wrong dosage will turn you into a puppet of illusions.

Dragon brain is even more dangerous, its fragrance spreading makes ordinary people lose their way in madness, seeing bizarre shadows crawling about. Only those with magical foundations dare to breathe it in, and they will be granted explosive magical power, like fire spreading from the abyss. Yet the price to pay is haunting dreams of underwater roars, lasting until the end of one’s life.

Distinction From The Mundane

Though their appearance recalls fierce crocodiles, Jiao Long are not ordinary Ngạc Ngư wandering rivers with crude strength. They carry dragon blood, superior rank with shapeshifting powers and magical elixirs. While crocodiles only know how to bite and tear, Jiao Long summon floods and alter terrain, making them the true terror of the water realm.

Ancient supernatural researchers, from yellowed pages of Hồng Bàng, affirm this clear distinction. Crocodiles may cultivate into Hà Bá after hundreds of years, but Jiao Long are born as dragon variants, so rare that in a lifetime only a few fortunate or unfortunate souls glimpse them briefly. Do not mistake them, for those who underestimate them will soon learn the truth in the rushing sound of unexpected floodwaters.
